Air travelers OK with pets in cabin, survey reveals

More than half of air travelers asked in a recent survey would be happy for pets to travel in airplane cabins.

Chicago based airport shuttle service Go Airport Express polled over 400 fliers of which 52% said they would be OK with pets traveling in the cabin but 63% of these said animals should be kept in a designated area to avoid close contact with allergy sufferers.

Airline rules allow trained pets registered as service animals to travel in the cabin while all other animals are stowed as cargo.

Several of the survey’s respondents said better cargo care for animals is needed.

Although rare, a number of high profile incidents involving animals have taken place, sparking concerns about the level of care afforded to animals despite the high costs.

In 2013, 21 deaths and 15 injuries to animals were recorded on US airlines, while six pets were lost in transit.
