AirAsia touts the end of boarding passes with FACES biometric check-in
AirAsia is hoping to eliminate the need for boarding passes and ID checks for all domestic flights.
With the updated FACES @AirAsia mobile app tool, boarding passes will eventually become a thing of the past, it says.
FACES – Fast Airport Clearance Experience System – was officially launched as a pilot programme in February.
AirAsia passengers only need to register their facial biometric data and passports once on the app
However they will still need to go through a one-time verification process with an AirAsia agent at the airport.
"Then you are ready to never use a boarding pass again and you can walk through our gates for domestic flights," tweeted AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes.
It is currently available in Senai Airport, Johor Bahru.
"This can be rolled out in all airports if only we had partners who supported us and all our digital initiatives," he said.
The airline says FACES has a 98% face matching success rate when scanning the biometric data.
