Airbus wins £2.46 billion order from South African Airways
Airbus has beaten Boeing and won a £2.46 billion order from South African Airways (SAA) for 41 aircraft.
The Airbus airliners, which will either be leased or bought outright, will re-equip the entire fleet of South African Airways.
SAA had initially been expected to renew only its long-haul capacity, but on Thursday the airline said the Airbuses would help SAA to phase out Boeings on long-haul and domestic routes.
SAA said three A340-600s would be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year and another four by the third quarter of 2003. The remaining 34 aircraft – a combination of A340-600s, A340-300Es, A320-200s and A319-100s – are scheduled for delivery between 2005 and 2012.
Commenting on the order, SAA President and CEO, André Viljoen said: “In Airbus, SAA has chosen a good and an efficient partner to help turnaround the airline to profitability and restore its competitiveness. Airbus offers lower operating costs and good product offering. The new fleet will give us flexibility to deploy it on most of our network and routes. It also gives SAA 10% more seat capacity.”
