Airlines show first signs of recovery
Airline shares surged on Friday morning following positive passenger traffic figures for December from low cost airline Go and Dutch carrier KLM.
At 1030 this morning BA shares had increased by over 9% to 232pence. The carrier is due to release its passenger traffic statistics for December this afternoon, and analysts believe that the positive figures from Go and KLM mean BA is also likely to start showing signs of recovery following the September 11 attacks.
Go said passenger traffic rose by 57% during December compared with the same month in 2000. In total it carried 340,384 passengers last month, compared to 216,413 passengers last December. The airline’s load factor increased slightly to 70.5%, compared to 68.9% in December 2000.
Meanwhile Dutch airline KLM’s traffic figures for December showed a modest improvement on the two previous months. Overall traffic fell 8% in December, compared to falls of 12% and 10% in October and November.
