Alaska port town to impose cruise fee
The Alaska port town of Haines is about to charge cruise passengers for the privilege of visiting.
The Haines Borough Assembly unanimously voted to impose a $9 cruise fee per passenger starting in the 2025 season.
It increases to $12 in 2027 and then $13 in 2029.
According to tourism director Reba Hylton, Haines welcomes about 100,000 cruise ship passengers a year.
The Alaska town itself is small with a population of only about 2,500 residents.
It is the first time it has charged a passenger fee.
The revenues will go toward improving port facilities and other tourism related infrastructure at the port.
Revenues will help combat the ‘burden and impacts’ that cruise ships bring.
Haines is not far from Glacier Bay Park and about 100 miles north of Juneau.
