American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are looking to expand services to Cuba as many other carriers drop services or pull out of the market altogether.
Both American and Delta applied for seven weekly flights between Miami International Airport and Havana.
American plans to add the flights from October 5 using a 160-seat Boeing 737.
It currently offers daily flights from Miami to Havana and to regional airports Holguín, Cienfuegos, Camagüey, Santa Clara and Varadero.
Delta, wants to double its daily Miami-Havana service with a second Miami-Havana flight from December 15, 2017.
It also serves the Cuban capital from New Yok and Atlanta.
"Delta has established a strong framework for sustainable success in the Cuban market," said Delta general manager for Central America and the Caribbean, Jose Zapata.
"The proposed flight would provide additional service and competition for South Florida, which has the largest Cuban-American population in the United States."
Last week JetBlue also applied for seven additional weekly flights to Havana.
The extra available capacity in the US-Havana market is equal to 21 flights a week, which comes after Frontier and Spirit Airlines announced they would both be halting services due to high costs and weak demand.
