Americans prefer to travel closer to home this summer
AAA Travel expects 700 million trips will be taken this summer by Americans.
According to the 2020 AAA Summer Travel Forecast, that is a 15% decline on July through September last year.
In fact it’s the first decline in more than a decade.
As expected road trips are most common for still-cautious travelers.
It says 97% of those surveyed will travel by car, while air travel is expected to fall significantly by 73%.
"Americans will get out and explore this summer though they’re taking a ‘wait and see approach’ when it comes to booking and are likely to book more long weekend getaways than extended vacations," AAA Travel SVP Paula Twidale said.
"The greatest share of travelers will take to the road to satisfy their wanderlust."
AAA says trips by rail, cruise ship and bus will likely decline by 86%.
The organization is seeing a different tourism landscape emerge with crowded cities being avoided.
While there is still interest in perennial favorites like LA and Las Vegas, Portland, Oregon, Myrtle Beach and Nashville are among the latest popular travel searches for weekend getaways by car rather than extended vacations.
