National rail operator Amtrak has announced its pets on trains policy will soon be available nationwide.
Amtrak last year piloted a program allowing pets onboard in Illinois and the East Coast.
This will now go nationwide on most rail routes of up to seven hours on long-distance trains.
The service begins from February 16, and costs a fixed fee of $25 per pet each way.
Only small cats or dogs will be permitted and must stay with their owner inside a pet carrier for the entire journey.
Only one pet per paying traveller is allowed.
"We are excited to bring this service to more of our passengers throughout the country who want to travel with these cherished family members," said Amtrak president and CEO Joseph Boardman.
"We listened to our passengers and delivered on this program, which will also help increase ridership and revenue."
Advance reservations are required for pets on all rail routes, Amtrak said.
