The Lux Collective celebrates the launch of two exclusive properties in Rwanda

The Lux Collective has officially entered Rwanda with the opening of two luxury resorts that form the foundation of an ambitious tourism circuit designed to showcase the country’s most iconic landscapes while promoting regenerative tourism.

The award-winning luxury hospitality company has launched LUX Lake Kivu* and SALT of Akagera, the first two properties in a planned five-resort portfolio that will span Rwanda’s leading wildlife and nature destinations.

The project introduces both the internationally recognized LUX* and SALT brands to the country and signals a major investment in Rwanda’s growing luxury tourism sector.

LUX* Lake Kivu

Located on the shores of Lake Kivu in western Rwanda, LUX* Lake Kivu is an intimate 14-room retreat offering contemporary luxury against the backdrop of one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Designed for travelers seeking a slower pace, the boutique resort emphasizes wellness, nature, and meaningful local experiences.

Guests can choose from elegant suites and a private villa overlooking the lake and surrounding hills, while enjoying a range of activities. Among the property’s experiences is the Napoleon Trek, a guided sunrise or sunset hike to Napoleon Island, where thousands of fruit bats take flight each evening. Another highlight, The Island Run, explores several islands scattered across Lake Kivu, including Blue Monkey Island, home to vervet monkeys, and Swimming Cows Island.

Adventure travelers can also embark on The Gorilla Morning, a full-day excursion into Volcanoes National Park to track Rwanda’s famous mountain gorillas. Coffee lovers are invited to discover the country’s celebrated coffee industry through From Cherry to Cup, which follows the journey from plantation to tasting.

The resort’s culinary program includes international restaurant Cleo, lakeside dining venue Riva, and the signature Maison LUX* café and bar. Wellness facilities include the LUX* ME Spa and daily sunrise yoga sessions.

Its location also makes it an ideal base for exploring western Rwanda, with relatively easy access to both Nyungwe Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park.

SALT of Akagera

In eastern Rwanda, SALT of Akagera brings the SALT brand into the safari market for the first time. Overlooking Lake Ihema inside Akagera National Park, the 60-room eco-luxury lodge sits within Rwanda’s only Big Five reserve, widely recognized as one of Africa’s leading wildlife conservation success stories.

The lodge embraces SALT’s philosophy of authentic, community-focused hospitality, blending contemporary comfort with environmentally conscious operations. Natural materials, locally crafted furnishings, and earthy colors reflect the surrounding landscapes of wetlands, lakes, woodlands, and savanna.

Wildlife safaris remain the property’s centerpiece, but guests are also encouraged to engage with Rwanda’s culture through locally inspired dining, wellness programs, and community partnerships.

The culinary offering follows a zero-waste, farm-to-table philosophy, showcasing ingredients sourced from nearby farms, including fresh produce, fish from local lakes, honey, and coffee.

Signature experiences include Root to Table, which explores Rwanda’s agricultural traditions, Boma Nights, featuring open-fire dining beneath the stars, and Beyond the Gate, an exclusive look at Akagera’s conservation and wildlife protection efforts.

Community engagement is central to the SALT experience. Programs such as SALT Shakers and Skill Swap connect visitors with local artisans, conservationists, and residents through cultural exchanges.

Both resorts operate under The Lux Collective’s sustainability framework, known as the Circle of Care, which focuses on responsible sourcing, local procurement, conservation awareness, and community development.

More LUX* properties to come in 2028

The launch of LUX* Lake Kivu and SALT of Akagera marks a significant milestone in our vision for Rwanda and our expansion across Africa,” said Olivier Chavy, Chief Executive Officer of The Lux Collective.

Together with our partners, we are creating Rwanda’s first world-class luxury tourism circuit, connecting distinct destination experiences while celebrating the country’s unique identity and generating lasting value for communities. These openings reflect our commitment to regenerative tourism and to elevating Rwanda on the global luxury travel map.

The two openings represent only the first phase of the company’s long-term Rwanda strategy. Three additional luxury properties are planned to open by 2028 in Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe National Park, and a second location within Akagera National Park.
