Wallonia is making it easier than ever for travelers to swap four wheels for two feet—or two wheels—with the launch of 12 new car-free travel itineraries designed to showcase the best of southern Belgium by rail.
The initiative promotes sustainable tourism by encouraging visitors to explore the region using trains combined with walking and cycling routes. Every itinerary starts and ends at a railway station, allowing travelers to leave the car at home while discovering Wallonia’s cities, countryside and cultural treasures at a slower, more rewarding pace.
The new collection of rail journeys is aimed at everyone from day-trippers to vacationers looking for an extended eco-friendly getaway. Each route is accompanied by downloadable roadbooks that provide practical guidance for exploring on foot or by bicycle after stepping off the train.
The itineraries are designed to be completely flexible. Visitors can enjoy each one independently or combine several routes into a longer rail adventure spanning multiple days. In total, the network can be adapted into sustainable vacations lasting up to 30 days, creating countless opportunities to experience Wallonia without relying on a car.
The program reflects the growing popularity of “slow tourism,” where the journey becomes just as important as the destination. Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, travelers are encouraged to immerse themselves in local landscapes, heritage sites and communities while reducing their environmental impact.
From historic towns and vibrant cities to forests, rivers and rolling countryside, the routes highlight the remarkable diversity of Wallonia.
The itineraries also make rail travel more accessible for international visitors arriving in Belgium. Thanks to the country’s extensive railway network, many destinations can be reached easily without renting a vehicle, making Wallonia an appealing option for travelers seeking greener vacation choices.
Car-free circuits include as an example itineraries from Brussels to Binche, from Mons to Tournai, from Namur to Dinant, from Arlon to Libramont or from Eupen to Liège.
Wallonia’s new network demonstrates that exploring by train does not mean sacrificing flexibility. For travel advisors, the itineraries provide an easy-to-sell product for clients interested in active vacations, sustainable tourism and authentic regional experiences. With downloadable guides, well-connected railway stations and multiple route combinations, Wallonia is positioning itself as one of Belgium’s leading destinations for car-free exploration.
