Amtrak increases Auto Train seat capacity

Thursday, 2 January 20143 min read

Responding to increased demand, Amtrak is adding extra seat capacity in early 2014 for its east coast Auto Train service.

Up to 60 extra seats in coach will be available on selected dates from the start of January through March.

These extra seats are being made available to meet the expected spike in travel plans for winter holiday weekends in Florida.

Auto Train is one of Amtrak’s busiest services, connecting Lorton, Va. (near Washington DC) with Sanford, Fl., non-stop daily along a near-900 mile stretch of railroad.

It is the only service of its kind in the US, able to accommodate both passengers and private vehicles including cars, motorcycles, SUVs and even small boats and jet skis.

Besides coach, Auto Train features a wide range of seating and overnight accommodation options for the 17-hour journey, such as fully reclining seats, known as roomettes, bedroom suites and four-berth family cabins.

In April 2013, it launched a Priority Vehicle Offloading service, offering speedy unloading of vehicles at destination for up to 20 drivers who pay a $50 supplement.
