At least two new Disney ships to homeport in Port Canaveral

Disney is to base at least two of its three new ships at Port Canaveral in Florida.

The cruise line’s first new builds since 2012 will begin rolling out one a year from 2021.

The ships will run on liquefied natural gas and will be of a similar size to the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray revealed the deployment news during the port’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

"Disney’s got a total of three (new ships). We don’t know if we’ll have two or three of those ships, but they’re coming to Port Canaveral," he said.

Specific details about the as-yet unnamed ships and planned itineraries out of Port Canaveral have not been disclosed but they are expected to offer the usual pre- and post-cruise packages to nearby Disney World, which is just an hour’s drive away.

Disney Cruise Line has also signed a memorandum of understanding with PortMiami for a dedicated cruise terminal.

The agreement calls for first rights on a new south side terminal once ship channel widening work has been completed at the port’s south side.

If it goes ahead the first deployment at the terminal would begin in 2023, with potentially a second the following year.

"The new facility will allow the port to expand its cruise business by accommodating Disney vessels capable of carrying more than 3,500 passengers. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Disney," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A Gimenez.
