Australian government to hold talks over cruise industry restart
Australia’s tourism minister Dan Tehan says discussions will start with the cruise industry later this month to look at potential ways to get cruise ships operating in Aussie waters again.
Foreign flagged large ships have been banned since the start of the pandemic.
The ban will be reviewed in mid-June, Tehan said.
"My hope is if we can continue managing the pandemic like we are, we will be able to see more cruise ships in our waters and hopefully in the waters between Australia and New Zealand as well," he said.
For several months the Australasia chapter of CLIA has been pushing for action from the federal government t look at proposals to restart the industry.
"It will help airlines and it will help the wonderful holiday destinations that we have around Australia where cruise ships stop," Tehan said.
"So to me it’s something that we should be looking at."
