Bahamas Celebration Cruises could restart soon
Bahamas Celebration Cruise Line could resume service between Florida and Freeport, Grand Bahama in the coming weeks, local media report.
The service has been halted since the Celebration cruise liner struck an unknown object in the water on October 31, sustaining a hole on its port side.
It has been out of action in dry dock since then.
The Bahamas Tribune says a replacement vessel, described as a "better ship" could be deployed between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport soon.
The Celebration brought over 1,000 passengers weekly into Freeport on two- and four day trips, which tourism officials say represents about 30% of all overnight stays.
The service disruption has seriously affected business at local resorts including the Grand Lucayan Resort, Island Seas Resort, Taino Beach Resort and the Viva Club Fortuna Resort.
Many merchants, store owners and ground transportation companies at Port Lucaya and the surrounding area are also feeling the pinch.
"We hope Celebration can resume their service, but we are looking forward and expect business to pick up during the week of Christmas," said local vendor Mizpah Anderson.
Several cruise ships are scheduled to call at Freeport Harbour between December 22 and 28.
