Bali boosts security measures

Wednesday, 6 October 20103 min read

Police in Bali are stepping up security measures, including patrols of surrounding waters, until the end of the year in anticipation of terror attacks, the Jakarta Globe reports.

The province’s police chief said this week,

“If there is another bomb attack here, Bali could suffer and be abandoned by tourists.”

Insp. Gen. Hadiatmoko said intensified sea patrols would be conducted near popular tourist beaches such as in Sanur, Kuta, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua.

The police chief was speaking on board a police patrol boat on loan from National Police headquarters to reinforce the island police’s patrol capabilities.

Bali has suffered two deadly bomb attacks in tourist areas, one in 2002 that killed 202 people — mostly foreigners — and another in 2005 that left 20 dead.

Police will be on high alert for the eighth anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombing on October 12.
