Bali hasn’t run out of puff
A crackdown by officials in Bali found that hotels in Kuta were continuing to flaunt the bylaw on smoke-free zones by allowing guests to smoke in lobbies and open spaces.
Bali Today reported that a team of inspectors swooped on several hotels, including the Holiday Inn, Bali Rani, Kartika Plaza Hotel, Kuta Paradiso, Bali Dynasty Hotel, Harris Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, Mercure Hotel and Bounty Hotel.
The Bali smoke-free zones by-law, enacted in November last year, forbids smoking in hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, places of worship, healthcare facilities and schools.
Anyone who smokes or provides cigarettes in the area may face three months imprisonment or a fine of Rp 50,000 (USD5.35).
Ayu Rai Andayani, head of the preventive disease department at Bali Health Agency, told Bali Daily that all the inspected hotels had violated the bylaw on smoke-free zones.
"They [hotel managements] still put ashtrays on tables in their lobbies. There were no signs prohibiting smoking,
"Most of the tourists said that they didn’t know about the smoke-free by-law and there were no signs to prohibit smoking," she added.
Reprimand letters were issued to the hotel managers
