Travel Foundation project to relieve pressure on marine environments

Recently, representatives from the Travel Foundation, The Chamber of Shipping, TURMEPA (a marine conservation NGO) and D-Marin (a private company who own marinas in the region,) met to officially launch the ‘Blue Wave’ project in Fethiye, Turkey.

The increasing popularity of marine tourism is putting pressure on the marine environment, and this project aims to:

Improve awareness and understanding of the threats to the marine environment from marine tourism

Improve best practice standards in the The Fethiye-Gocek Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA) in Turkey.

Build capacity to monitor the effects marine tourism on the marine environment in order to improve the management of marine tourism development.

The project also aims to improve awareness and understanding of the threats to the marine environment from marine tourism – both within the tourism sector and amongst tourists themselves. It also aims to improve the level of sustainable practices carried out within the sector and amongst tourists, creating a cleaner and more appealing tourism product.

Activities will include:

Improving signage for tourists to raise awareness of threats to the environment and how they can mitigate these threats; to be located in marinas and bays.

Producing printed materials targeted at tourists for distribution at marinas, bays and by boat operators outlining recommended best practice for boat users.

And

Delivering training workshops for staff working at marinas and for boat operators.
