DUBAI — US planemaker Boeing has warned a prolonged strike by workers at its production plants could further delay the debut of the787, expected in the fourth quarter 2008, and impact on-time deliveries to Gulf airlines.
The on-going strike by more than 27,000 workers halted Boeing’s production lines for the 737, 747, 777 as well as the 787 Dreamliner aircraft, most of which are integral to Gulf carriers’ fast expansion goals.
The strike has disrupted production of four 777 aircraft which are due for delivery to Emirates, and another 777 meant for Qatar Airways on Boeing’s Everett assembly line.
A Boeing spokesman, told Khaleej Times it was too early to determine the impact on deliveries of aircraft to Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways as that would depend on how long the strike lasts.
Currently, Emirates has on order a total of 52 aircraft, including 10 747-8F, while Etihad has placed orders for 45 aircraft including 35 787-9 and 10 777-300ER planes.
Other regional carriers awaiting deliveries include Gulf Air, 16 787-8, RAK Airways four 737-800, Qatar Airways, a total of 54 aircraft, including 30 787-8 and 19 777s, and FlyDubai 50 737-800.
