Branson calls aviation summit amid global warming concerns
Virgin Atlantic chairman Sir Richard Branson has called for a meeting of aviation leaders amid heightened concern over climate change.
He reportedly planned to bring together 34 industry leaders as an authoritative government-commissioned report by former World Bank chief economist Sir Nicholas Stern on the impact of global warming was being published.
It is likely to prompt calls for more green taxes, including a possible ‘carbon tax’ on airlines, thought to be about £15 per ticket, according to The Times.
Airlines are under the spotlight due to the rapid growth in cheap flights and the forecast rise in carbon dioxide emissions from aircraft.
Prime Minister Tony Blair called the Stern review a “landmark in the struggle against climate change”.
