Breastfeeding mum ‘humiliated’ by luxury hotel
A London mum claims she was humiliated when asked to cover up while breastfeeding her 12-week-old baby at Claridge’s.
Lou Burns, 35, was having a Christmas tea treat at the luxury hotel in London with her mother and sister when her baby needed feeding.
Despite breastfeeding discreetly, a waiter hurried over with a huge napkin and said it was the hotel’s policy to cover up.
Burns, from Streatham, who worked in financial services, said she felt very awkward and wanted to leave, but her mother and sister had come from the Midlands for their Christmas treat at the hotel.
She told the Guardian: "I didn’t expect to be admonished in a central London hotel.
"It was a Christmas treat. No one should be made to feel like that."
A Claridge’s spokeswoman said that it was the hotel’s policy to never talk about guests but added: "We are saddened to see what is being discussed and we feel we need to clarify that breastfeeding is of course embraced at Claridge’s. All we ask is that our guests are discreet."
