Brits stranded in Mexico following hurricane will be evacuated today
British tourists stranded in Mexico following Hurricane Odile are being told to get to Los Cabos airport today so they can be flown home.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is urging any Brits in the affected parts of Baja California and Baja California Sur to be at the airport from 6am, local time, this morning where British consular staff and the Mexican authorities will arrange for them to get on evacuation flights.
As the Mexican government begins airlifting thousands of stranded tourists from the storm-damaged resort area, hotels are now assessing the damage wrought by Hurricane Odile.
Resort hotels remain closed and several properties say they will not accept any new guests for several weeks.
The One&Only Palmilla will remain closed until at least September 25, and Starwood Hotels’ Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar and Westin Resort and Spa Los Cabos will not accept any new guests until the end of October.
Two Hyatt properties in the resort will also suspend reservations for the next month.
The Esperanza resort will remain closed to ‘assess the extent of the damage and repairs over the next few days’.
Los Cabos international airport still remains closed with all scheduled flights in and out suspended, but special charter planes have been airlifting the first wave of stranded holidaymakers to other Mexican cities.
Airport officials said once it has clearance to resume commercial air services, departing flights will take priority to ease the backlog.
AccuWeather said Hurricane Odile made landfall Sunday with winds up to 127 mph.
Over 130 people were treated for minor injuries but no fatalities were reported.
Tropical storm Odile is now moving up the Gulf of California and is expected to continue weakening as it moves towards the US state of Arizona.
