Call for St George’s Day national holiday
More than a quarter (27%) of English people plan to celebrate St George’s Day today (Monday).
A survey conducted for VisitBritain shows that 70% think that St George’s Day should be a national holiday. If it was, nearly two-thirds of people would use the time to relax with their family and friends.
Planned events in London include screenings of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ in Trafalgar Square, Shakespeare’s birthday celebrations at the Globe Theatre, a St George’s festival in Covent Garden and outdoor screenings of historic silent films of Shakespeare plays.
To celebrate England’s national day, Capital Gold is broadcasting special programmes including the results of a poll to find the top 100 songs by English artists.
VisitBritain marketing director Mike Bedingfield said on Friday: “We’ve had a fantastic start to the holiday season with a particularly glorious Easter and the signs are good for another pleasant weekend ahead of St George’s Day.
“If even a fraction of us choose to enjoy a day or a weekend away from home with our family and friends, we can help confirm England as the place to be seen on holiday this year.”
