A lawmaker is urging the Transportation Security Administration to scrap or reduce the fee of the PreCheck program for military veterans.
New Jersey Democrat Rep. Bill Pascrell wrote to TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger asking for the waiving or a discount to the $85 enrolment fee, The Hill reports.
"These brave men and women have a long, well documented history of service to our nation," Pascrell wrote, adding the fee is ‘prohibitively expensive’ for many veterans.
"Given the sacrifice that our nation’s veterans have made, I urge you to examine the feasibility of instituting a program that would allow veterans to participate in the TSA PreCheck program free of charge or with a discounted application fee."
The fee gives travelers expedited screening at airports for a five-year period, and covers background checks for each enrolee.
Pascrell argues a reduced fee makes sense as many have been vetted for security clearance in the past during their time in the military and this ‘should make the background process simpler to complete.’
