Carnival: $2 billion in new ships
Carnival Corporation & plc has reached an agreement with the Italian shipbuilders Fincantieri to build four new cruise ships worth $2 billion.
The shipbuilder will construct the new vessels for Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Costa Crociere.
The ships will add 11,756 lower berths to the cruise operator’s fleet.
Two of the orders were placed in US dollars and the others in euros.
Said Carnival chairman and CEO Micky Arison:
“Fincantieri constructs some of the world’s most beautiful and technically advanced ships and this agreement enables us to expand our core North American and European brands at very competitive prices considering today’s US dollar/euro ratio.”
The new ships include a 2,044-passenger vessel that will be the largest ever constructed for Holland America Inc.
The new ships will enter service in 2008.
Carnival Corporation & plc is the largest cruise vacation group in the world with a portfolio of 12 cruise brands in North America, Europe and Australia.
Together, the brands operate 79 ships with 137,000 lower berths.
