Carnival to gain another new ship
Carnival Cruise Lines is to add a 3,006-passenger ship in 2008 including the largest spa and children’s facilities in the fleet.
Parent company Carnival Corporation had originally ordered 112.000-ton vessel for one of its Europe brands but has decided that it should instead be deployed in the US.
The as yet unnamed ship is part of a five-vessel agreement with Italian shipyard Fincantieri which includes Emerald Princess for Princess Cruises, Carnival Freedom for Carnival Cruise Lines, 116,000-ton Ventura for P&O Cruises and a redesign of Cunard’s previously ordered Queen Victoria.
Carnival chairman and CEO Micky Arison said: “Originally we envisioned this ship would be designated for one of our European brands. However, Carnival Cruise Lines continues to perform at a very high level and based on the tremendous consumer demand for its products, we now believe that this specific tonnage would be best utilised for Carnival’s North American market.”
The ship will include a 17,800-square-foot spa over tow decks and a 5,500-square-foot children’s playroom, the largest in the Carnival fleet.
Sixty per cent of the 1,503 cabins will have sea views, with 60% of those having balconies.
