Chapter 1: Discover Central Florida’s lesser-known wonder – Lakeland

By Graham McKenzie
If you are travelling to Florida, there is a high likelihood you will be flying into Tampa or Orlando.
The good news is that less than an hour’s drive from both is a huge slice of the sunshine state at its authentic best. Nestled in the heart of the Central Florida region lies Lakeland which offers a unique blend of natural wonders, family-friendly attractions, and small-town charm.
Lakeland’s charm shines through in its vibrant community events and welcoming atmosphere. I was lucky enough to experience the Friday night market that focussed on not only local food but also local clubs, support groups and musical societies. The bonhomie from the stallholders and crowd was very tangible. More extensive food festivals like the Lakeland Pig Fest showcase the region’s renowned BBQ scene.
If you’re not around during this festival but have a hankering for top quality barbeque, then head for Peebles which has been serving smoked meat since 1947. Only open Thursday to Sunday it’s quite possible they will sell out if you don’t go early in the week, but it is worth it for the mouth-watering, finger licking treats in store.
Located up front and centre of the main town square is the restaurant Nineteen61. The food, which is a fusion of Latino, Spanish and Southern cuisine, is absolutely delicious and cannot be spoken of highly enough. What is even more remarkable is the atmosphere and culture of the restaurant which would definitely be categorised fine dining. Often one will read that what the chefs and owners are more interested in is the local nature of the food, the community from which they buy it and their staff.
It is exemplified not only in the restaurant but in the roof top cocktail bar that is part of the whole offering. In many respects the restaurant reflects what the rest of the town community offers a visitor, which is a very warm welcome like you’re a guest in their backyard.
True to its name, Lakeland boasts numerous lakes that provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation. A short drive away in Winter Haven is the Chain of Lakes, where scenic boat tours offer insights into local wildlife and community history. These interconnected lakes are perfect for fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying serene views.
Such is the interconnection of these lakes, when this area was known for the abundance of citrus, it was used as a method of distributing the fruit. Oranges were floated on the lakes and then forced into the narrow link passages and from there into loading bays. Much of the vitamin c for US Troops during both World wars was delivered from these lakes.
The land of lakes is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The Circle B Bar Reserve, named one of the “Top 50 Places to See Wildlife” by USA Today, spans over 1,267 acres of freshwater marshes, hardwood swamps, and oak hammocks teeming with wildlife.
Visitors like me, can stroll along the aptly named Alligator Alley trail to spot alligators basking in the sun or enjoy birdwatching opportunities that include herons, egrets, and osprey. Almost everywhere you look something of interest pops up, fly’s by or strolls through the forest. For residents it is interesting, for visitors it is a wonderland of flora and fauna.
Lakeland’s natural beauty does however extend beyond its lakes. The Se7en Wetlands Park spans 1,640 acres of constructed wetlands with 8.5 miles of hiking trails through diverse ecosystems like marshes and uplands. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot alligators, bobcats, or sandhill cranes during their visit. Bonnet Springs Park also offers a blend of nature and culture across its sprawling 168 acres. Visitors can enjoy walking trails surrounded by lush greenery or partake in lake activities for a refreshing outdoor experience.
Families visiting Lakeland will find plenty to entertain their children. LEGOLAND Florida Resort in nearby Winter Haven provides over 50 rides and attractions tailored to kids aged 2-12. The theme park brings LEGO bricks to life with captivating interactive experiences.
For an educational outing closer to home, Bonnet Springs Park houses the Florida Children’s Museum. This state-of-the-art facility features two floors of interactive exhibits designed to spark creativity and curiosity in young minds.
