China warns visitors to keep off the 'wild Great Wall'

As China’s big holiday begins, authorities are clamping down on tourists trying to walk along the ‘wild Great Wall.’

This refers to parts of the Great Wall which are not restored and are off-limits to visitors.

With millions expected over the Golden Week holiday, fines for trespassing will be imposed more strictly.

It ranges from a light fine of $30 up to a whopping $4,000 depending on the offence.

Extra security will be on duty.

"This year’s National Day holiday lasts eight days and the number of visitors to explore the ‘wild Great Wall’ is bound to increase," Yu Hankuan, director of the Yanqing District Cultural Relics Administration told the Global Times.

Some of these sections of wall are steep and quite dangerous, said Yu.

Thousands routinely try to climb the closed-off sections of the Wall each year.

Each year, more than 10 million visitors flock to the Great Wall, although like most attractions across China, there are still capacity limits on the number of daily visitors allowed.
