CHTA slams Canada’s pre-travel testing program
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) has weighed in on Canada’s new Covid testing regime, saying it adds an unnecessary burden for inbound travelers.
The new rule mandates that travelers provide proof of a negative Covid-19 PCR test prior to travel to Canada.
It has led to a spike in cancellations from Canadians with bookings for Caribbean vacations in the coming weeks.
It has also proving problematic for Canadians currently in the Caribbean region finding it difficult to get tested before their return trip home.
"We anticipate many stranded Canadians being unable to return home due to their inability to get tests in the required time," said CHTA’s Acting CEO and Director General Vanessa Ledesma.
"This policy is creating challenges and places even greater economic hardship on the people and governments of the Caribbean and on the thousands of Canadians currently in the Caribbean."
"On behalf of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, we respectfully request reconsideration of this policy," CHTA wrote in a letter addressed to Canada’s Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.
