Coast guard reveals why Carnival was forced to cancel Fathom soft launch cruise
Carnival was forced to cancel the soft launch cruise of its new ‘Fathom’ brand, to be operated by the recently refurbished 710-passenger Adonia, due to faulty fire doors.
The ship was due to make its first voyage since its refit, from Miami to the Dominican Republic, on Sunday
However, a routine inspection uncovered several issues, according to the US Coast Guard, including a problem with the ship’s sliding fire doors.
"The cruise ship failed several portions of the inspection. The most serious remaining problem is with numerous sliding fire screen doors that are inoperable," the US Coast Guard said in a statement.
"The Coast Guard will continue to work with the cruise line to ensure both vessel and crew meet the standards to protect passenger safety."
A number of additional tests were required, which originally delayed and then ultimately cancelled the sailing.
Initial Certificate of Compliance testing is mandatory for all ships that start sailing from the US.
While testing is still ongoing, it will not affect Fathom’s inaugural sailing on April 17.
Carnival said cruise passengers booked on last weekend’s sailing will be given ‘full reimbursement of expenses and credits toward future cruises.’
