Customs swoop on ivory smugglers
Customs officials in Bangkok have arrested a Chinese woman and a man from Vietnam after they allegedly tried to smuggle elephant tusks and ivory products out of Thailand.
The pair were arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport after they were found to be carrying 18 pieces of tusk and 587 ivory products in their suitcases. The ivory was valued at about US$280,000.
A Thai Customs official, quoted by The Nation newspaper, said the arrest was the result of his department boosting its preventive measures to block the ivory trade in line with CITES, the international wildlife agency.
The suspects claimed they were paid by an Asian to smuggle the items from the Ivory Coast to Siem Reap in Cambodia via Bangkok.
The woman told authorities she was paid US$500 and the Vietnamese man $300 to smuggle the items.
