Darwin to host Indigenous Tourism Conference
Australia is to host an historic conference focusing on the tourism opportunities available to indigenous communities across the Asia-Pacific region.
The inaugural Pacific-Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference (PAITC) is a joint initiative of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), Tourism Northern Territory and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre on September 27-28, 2011.
ATEC chairman John King said that the PAITC had several objectives – to establish the role of tourism in Indigenous advancement and cultural preservation, to celebrate indigenous tourism experiences as a vehicle for cultural understanding, tolerance and peace, and to help understand and overcome impediments to indigenous tourism development.
He added, “As the world becomes increasingly homogenous, Indigenous cultures will become increasingly valuable for destinations to provide differentiation and authenticity.
“The Asia-Pacific region boasts the greatest concentration and variety of indigenous peoples and cultures in the world.
“Tourism provides the strongest driver to restore, protect and promote indigenous cultures.”
Delegates at the two-day PAITC event will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of pre- and post-conference visits to Australian indigenous tourism experiences and tours organised by Tourism Northern Territory.
