Delta expands from UK regions
Transatlantic flights from Edinburgh and Manchester have been confirmed as part of massive international expansion plans by Delta Air Lines.
The US carrier is to serve Atlanta from the Scottish city from May 4 next year and start Manchester-New York (JFK) flights on May 15.
A link from Dublin and Shannon to New York is also being established from May 15 as part of a plan for 11 new North Atlantic routes to Europe and the Middle East in 2006.
As previously reported by TravelMole, Delta claims it will become the world’s largest airline across the Atlantic.
The carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month and is scaling back US routes in favour of expansion overseas, a move described by CEO Gerald Grinstein as “an integral part of our customer-focused transformation plan”.
The airline also intends to grow in Latin America and the Caribbean by adding 28 routes this winter from its Atlanta hub.
“With next summer’s additions, Delta will serve 66 international destinations in 40 countries from Atlanta, making Delta’s Atlanta hub the third largest international gateway in North America,” said chief of network and revenue management Glen Hauenstein.
To coincide with the international expansion, the airline is to revamp its BusinessElite cabins and introduce its improved domestic economy class onto international routes.
