Dozen airport workers arrested over Tenerife airport thefts
Police have made several arrests at the largest airport in Tenerife over a spike in passenger baggage thefts.
The Guardia Civil police arrested 14 workers on suspicion of baggage theft with about 20 others under investigation.
The Tenerife South airport serves about 11 million passengers each year, mostly British and European holidaymakers.
The investigation started after a surge in theft complaints from passengers.
Police have recovered stolen items worth nearly €2 million.
It includes about €13,000 cash, 12- pieces of jewelry and many mobile phones and electronic devices.
Police say thefts occurred as bags were loaded into the aircraft hold.
The suspects then opened suitcases and stole valuables, police say.
Many items have been resold online or to local stores.
