easyJet expands fleet on back of record profits
EasyJet has ordered 52 Airbus A319s and secured options on a further 75 on the back of record profits.
The UK budget airline saw pre-tax profits rise by 56% to £129 million in the year to September.
Ancillery revenues rose “significantly” in all areas by 34%, equivalent to 86p per seat.
The airline carried 11.5% more passengers at 33 million over the previous year and opened 58 new routes to bring its network up to 262 routes.
The results came despite a 33% rise in fuel costs.
The airline’s chief executive Andy Harrison said: “Our Airbus order supports both our growth and our environmental credentials.
“The combination of our modern fleet, with an average age of 2.2 years, and high utilisation means we emit nearly 30% fewer emissions per passenger kilometre than traditional airlines flying similar routes.”
Welcoming the Stern review, he added: “We believe the best way forward is to bring aviation into the European Emissions Trading System as soon as possible.”
Harrison described current trading as being in line with expectations with yields for winter “broadly in line” with last year.
He added: “As we look further forward we anticipate more pressure on yields in the summer due to continued aggressive competition.”
