First Tonga tsunami death is British expat
A British expat has been confirmed as the first known death in last weekend’s Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami.
According to the family in Sussex, the body of Angela Glover was discovered by her husband after being swept away in the tsunami.
She founded and worked at the Tongan Animal Welfare Society.
The scale of damage is still unclear as an undersea cable was damaged knocking out the internet and international phone links.
It could take at least two weeks before communications are restored.
"Further volcanic activity cannot be ruled out," the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in an update.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the eruption was the equivalent of a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, although the overall impact won’t likely lead to global cooling.
The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano is about 40 miles from capital Nuku’alofa.
