Garuda Indonesia has gone on a major shopping binge at the Paris Air Show.
National flag carrier Garuda has firmed up a large order with plane maker Boeing for 30 787-9 Dreamliner planes and an additional 30 737 MAX jets in deal that could be worth more than $10 billion at list prices.
Garuda will take delivery of the Dreamliner jets in 2020, followed by the 737 Max planes two years later, Boeing said.
This latest order is in addition to a commitment agreed with Boeing last October to purchase 50 737 MAX planes.
The company also said it would buy 30 new jets from rival plane maker Airbus worth $9.1 billion.
"The agreement is part of Garuda Indonesia’s revitalisation programme in order to provide our passengers with the best possible experience with the youngest fleet in the sky," said Garuda CEO Arif Wibowo.
"It will support the airline’s future plan to further expand its network globally. The 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX are extraordinary airplanes with exceptional economics that will keep us competitive and bring a new level of service excellence," Wibowo added.
Wibowo also hinted that the network expansion could include flights to the US but gave no further details.
IATA estimates the Indonesian aviation market will triple within 20 years and become the world’s sixth largest.
