Global air travel continues recovery
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says the post-pandemic recovery momentum continued throughout June for global air travel markets.
Total traffic in June 2023 (in revenue passenger kilometres) rose 31% compared to June 2022.
Overall, global air travel is now at 94.2% of pre-Covid levels.
For the first half of 2023, total traffic is up 47.2% year on year.
International traffic climbed 33.7% versus June 2022.
All passenger traffic markets showed good growth, IATA said.
It has now reached an overall 88.2% of pre-pandemic June 2019 levels.
“The northern summer travel season got off to a strong start with double-digit demand growth and average load factors topping 84%,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.
“Planes are full which is good news for airlines, local economies, and travel and tourism dependent jobs.”
“All benefit from the industry’s ongoing recovery.”
Asia-Pacific airlines had by far the largest percentage gain at 128%.
Load factor was up to 82.9%.
European carriers posted an overall 14% traffic rise versus June 2022, while load factor is now at 87,8%.
