Grant Shapps’ Spain holiday cut short to start quarantine
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is cutting short his ill-timed holiday in Spain.
Shapps headed to Spain just hours before all arrivals to the UK were ordered to self-isolate.
The PM’s office confirmed Snapps would not be exempted and is required to self-isolate.
"The sooner I get back from Spain myself, the sooner I can get through quarantine. So I’m leaving my family to travel back to the UK on Wednesday," the cabinet minister said.
Government colleague Michael Gove also announced he is cancelling his own plans for a break in the Balearic Islands.
"I know there will be other people who’ll be much worse affected than me, and I do strongly sympathise with the situation in which they find themselves, but we all recognise that public health comes first," Gove said.
Imposing the mandatory quarantine is ‘unjust’ said Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Snchez.
Nearly two-thirds of new Covid-19 have occurred in just two regions, according to Sanchez.
"We are talking with British authorities to try to get them to reconsider a measure that, in our opinion, is not well adjusted."
The government’s handling has been ‘chaotic’ and the travel sector desperately needs support, said Shadow Transport Secretary Jim McMahon.
"Airline industry and passengers need clarity," McMahon said.
