A report in The Sydney Mornins Herald says that in a bid to boost tourism affected by years of conflict with Maoist rebels, the Nepalese Government is slashing climbing fees for Mount Everest during the off-season.
Dozens of mountaineering teams each pay more than $87,000 during the main climbing season, from March to May, but the 8850-metre summit is virtually deserted throughout the northern autumn and winter.
Fees will be cut by 50 per cent for autumn and 75 per cent from December to January.
Amazing, I thought we were trying to protect places like this not get more people to visit!
