Gun attack honeymooners’ families head for Antigua
The families of the Antigua honeymooners who were shot on Sunday will travel to the island today.
Both sets of parents will make the grim trip to the Caribbean just two weeks after attending the couple’s wedding in Pontardawe near Swansea, South Wales.
The Mullanys will fly to the normally tranquil tourism mecca to see their son who is fighting for life in hospital with a bullet lodged in his brain. The 31-year-old physiotherapist is in the intensive care unit with a fractured skull, damage to the spinal cord, brain haemorrhaging and a broken leg, according to sources. His wife Catherine was certified dead on Sunday at Holberton General Hospital St Johns following a suspected robbery.
The couple were staying at Cocos Hotel at Valley Church on the island. A police investigation is underway.
Last year 19 people were murdered on Antigua and Mrs Mullany is the 10th person murdered this year. However, the Foreign Office says it has no plans to change its travel advice to the island.
The island’s minister of tourism and civil aviation the honourable Harold Lovell said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families of the victims of this incident at this very difficult time. I have full confidence in the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda who are conducting an extensive investigation. This isolated incident has deeply shocked our community and we wish to reassure visitors that Antigua and Barbuda is a safe destination.â€
Tourist representatives for the island said they had nothing new to add but were awaiting further news on the police investigation. It is believed that between three and six people have been detained for questioning.
