London Heathrow plans a multibillion-pound passenger terminal investment ahead of any work for a third runway.
Airport CEO Thomas Woldbye is set to detail upgrade works for Terminals 2 and 5 while plans for a third runway are formulated.
The airport says the upgraded passenger facilities are needed to best make use of a third runway.
It will be backed by privately funded investment.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently gave government backing for a third Heathrow runway, but this is still many years away.
“As part of a phased expansion, I’m confirming multibillion-pound investment plans to upgrade our terminal buildings and enhance the passenger experience,” Woldbye said.
“This is vital investment and will ensure Heathrow remains globally competitive.”
Although it is supported by government, a third Heathrow runway faces opposition from environmental groups and even some members of the government.
“We are committed to listening and working with our local communities to provide certainty and end years of doubt,” Woldbye said, adding that it will meet environmental requirements.
Critics are skeptical a third runway’s lengthy planning process, design and construction can all be completed within a decade.
