Heavy snowfall spurs more early resort openings across Europe

More continued snowfall in Alpine Europe has led to a spate of early resort openings.

Specialist ski travel agency Ski Solutions reports a host of ski areas opening early ahead of schedule.

In France, Avoriaz has a pre-partial opening on 2 December, two weeks ahead of schedule.

Val Gardena  also pre-partially opens on 2 December a few days ahead of its scheduled 5 December opening.

Also on 2 December, Flaine opens ahead of its original plan of 16 December.

Simultaneously, Austria has seen a week of heavy snowfall, with even more forecasted in the coming weeks.

Kaprun set the stage earlier this month, partially opening on 3 November.

Looking ahead, Ellmau is gearing up to open on 8 December, while Obertauern opened on 30 November, culminating in a full grand opening on 1 December.

Additionally, St. Anton was scheduled to open on 1  December, anticipating substantial snowfall by the weekend.

Meanwhile, in Switzerland, St. Moritz kicked off its season early on 25 November, with a forecast of 85 cm of snow in the days ahead.

Ian McIlrath, MD of Ski Solutions, said “Superb early snow conditions across most of the Alps supports this year being the best start to the ski season in a decade.”

“Ski Solutions has seen demand surge over the last six weeks, with bookings up nearly 20% year-on-year.”
