Hong Kong expects more protests on eve of Chinese National Day

More protests are expected to take place in Hong Kong on the eve of Chinese National Day, a holiday tomorrow (Wednesday) that marks the founding of Communist China

Numbers of protestors have dwindled since the weekend, but more pro-democracy protesters are expected to take to Hong Kong’s streets tonight.

On Monday night, tens of thousands of singing and chanting protestors defied tear gas and police baton charges to continue their campaign to block streets.

Some demonstrators wore masks and used umbrellas or plastic capes to protect themselves, prompting the phrase ‘umbrella revolution’ to trend on social media.

Riot police who used force over the weekend have since been withdrawn and the protests have remained relatively calm.

Hong Kong leader CY Leung has urged protestors to ‘immediately’ stop their campaign.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising visitors to monitor local media and transport company websites for information about route changes or station closures and to avoid public demonstrations.
