India police investigate harassment of flight attendants
India’s civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri has urged the police to provide protection to airline cabin crew after reported incidents of harassment of flight attendants and pilots.
Some have been verbally abused in their homes and neighbourhoods over fears they have coronavirus.
It came to light after an Air India flight attendant took to social media detailing the harassment of herself and her mother.
"These vigilantes have conveniently forgotten that many a spouse, parent, and near and dear ones have been brought home safe and secure from affected countries thanks to the heroic efforts of these Air India crew," the airline said in a statement.
IndiGo also said some of its employees have suffered the same fate.
"There are some instances when our employees have been ostracised from their communities as a result of their line of duty and travel history," IndiGo said.
Our colleagues have been working selflessly to serve the country at this critical juncture. Please support our operating colleagues in such a difficult time."
It has led to being refused service in grocery stores and children of airline employees being shunned.
"Please be rest assured, anyone discriminating against heroes, discharging their duties risking their own safety will be dealt with strictly," Kolkatta police commissioner Anuj Sharma, who is investigating the incidents cited by the Air India flight attendant.
