Indian air regulator looking to curb rising cancellation fees

There may be good news on the horizon for Indian air travellers.

The airline watchdog is reportedly looking at curbing the fees airlines can charge for cancelling a ticket.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has asked for full data on fees charged for cancellations from each airline following a number of complaints sent to DGCA chief M Sathiyavathy.

"We will analyse this data and then take a call by next week," a DGCA official said.

Cancellation charges vary widely and can cost up to Rs 4,000 for the cancellation of a domestic flight.

"While ticket prices have been slashed to improve airline loads most or all carriers have raised cancellation prices by 50%-100%," said Indiver Rastogi, the COO of Thomas Cook India.

One Indian carrier defended the fees it charges for cancelled tickets.

A spokesman from airline IndiGo said: "Our cancellation charge used to be Rs 1,500 earlier. Now, we have four slabs from Rs 1,250 to Rs 2,250. People who cancel way in advance will be charged less now and charges have, in fact, been lowered for them.
