The killer whale at the center of the controversial documentary that sparked a massive backlash and boycotts of SeaWorld Entertainment has died.
SeaWorld was ‘deeply saddened to announce that one of its most well-known orcas, Tilikum, has passed away.’
"Tilikum had, and will continue to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired. My heart goes out to our team who cared for him like family," said CEO Joel Manby.
The orca was thought to be 36 years old.
Both Tilikum and the theme park operator gaine notoriety in 2010 when the orca dragged trainer Dawn Brancheau under the water and drowned her in front of spectators.
The resulting documentary ‘Blackfish’ brought public scrutiny to the conditions of captive orcas and both attendance and SeaWorld’s share price plunged.
It also caused the departure of the then-CEO.
Last year SeaWorld finally agreed to end breeding of orcas and phase out theatrical shows.
SeaWorld’s San Diego park had its final theatrical orca demonstration on Sunday.
