Israel is hoping the Pope’s worldwide appeal will give the country’s tourism industry a timely boost.
There could be a rise of up to 7% in tourist arrivals over the next year as a direct result of the Pope’s visit on May 25-26, according to tourism minister Uzi Landau.
"I believe this will inspire many to come," the minister said, adding that the government has invested $2.9 million in a social media marketing campaign.
An Instagram contest to win a free trip to Israel drew over 34 million hits during March and April, the ministry said.
Oded Grofman, deputy director general of the Israel Incoming Tour Operators Association said there has already been a marked increase in interest from Catholic church groups due to the pope’s visit.
Of the 3.5 million tourists who came to Israel last year around 25% were Catholic.
"The kind of problems we have now are sometimes lack of hotel rooms and airplane seats," said Grofman.
Pope Francis will also visit the West Bank and Jordan during the three-day tour.
