JAL hikes international fuel surcharge
Japan Air Lines has raised its international fuel surcharge on international tickets issued between October 1 and December 31.
The rate for flights from Europe to Japan will go up from $100 to $108 in the face of rising jet fuel.
The airline said the fuel surcharge for tickets issued from January to March 2008 will be reviewed based on the average price of fuel for August through to October.
The company said fuel prices had averaged $84.37 per barrel in the three months from May and surcharges will only be cancelled completely when the price stays below a “benchmark” of $45.
JAl said it would conduct counter-measures to limit the full impact of the price increase, including fuel hedging, fuel consumption reductions and the introduction of more fuel-efficient small and medium-sized aircraft to its fleet.
But the airline added: “Despite these measures, the company is still reluctantly obliged to ask its international passengers to bear part of the burden caused by the unprecedented increase in the price of fuel over the past few years.”
JAL originally introduced fuel surcharges on international tickets in February 2005.
