Jetstar to launch Melbourne – Perth
Qantas owned budget air carrier Jetstar is to launch a daily service between Perth and Melbourne in late March.
From March 28 one of the airline’s new fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft will leave Melbourne in the morning and return from Perth in the late afternoon each day.
The cost of a one way flight will be A$189 (US$141.16) with a special deal of A$99 available to mark the launch of the service.
Jetstar’s acting chief executive Bruce Buchanan said the new service would add about 2,500 seats to existing Qantas operations between the two cities and would boost tourism in Western Australia.
“Western Australia and the Perth market has always been on Jetstar’s radar since our operational launch in May 2004,” he said
“With our existing aircraft fleet capacity the timing to commence regular interstate air services from the state is now right.”
Acting WA premier Eric Ripper said Jetstar would introduce competition into the WA aviation market.
“The introduction of Jetstar into the Western Australian market will put us on an even footing with the rest of the country when it comes to budget flights,” Mr Ripper said.
“Jetstar’s low fares will inject competition into the market and make Western Australia a viable option for those people who have long had WA top of their wish list but been deterred by flight costs.”
In Melbourne the service will operate out of Avalon airport, which is 55 kilometres west of the CBD and 15 kilometres north east of Geelong.
Mr Buchanan said Jetstar’s roll out of the Airbus A320 was on track with 23 of the aircraft expected to be in the air by June 2006.
