Korea to build cultural center in New York
South Korea is expanding its cultural footprint in the US with a new information and cultural center planned for New York City.
It will become the second US facility of its kind after Los Angeles.
The Korean government is investing about $69 million in the project which will be housed in a new seven-story building on 32nd Street in Manhattan.
It will comprise the Korea Cultural Center, a small concert hall, exhibition rooms, a library and lecture rooms.
It will also house the New York office of the Korea Tourism Organization.
The Korea Centers aim to provide a one-stop facility for culture, arts, education and tourism.
It is slated to open in 2020.
"The New York Korea Center will become a place where local people who want to get access to Korean culture can enjoy all aspects of Korean culture, including performances, exhibitions, education and tourism, in one place. We expect it to serve as a leading base for promoting Korean culture in New York, a city leading global trends in culture and arts," The Korean Culture and Information Service said.
Apart from LA, there are also major Korea Centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and Paris, which opens later this year.
